Adolis Garcia: The Heart of a World Champion

We’re 3 days into Spring Training and you still can’t wipe the smile off the face of Rangers Right Fielder Adolis Garcia. And, he has good reason to be in a good mood.

“I’m happy to be back in baseball. Everything is the same,” Garcia told the media in his 1st clubhouse interview speaking exclusively in English. “Everything is the same. Same goal. Win and do the best for the team.'“

Eight years after defecting from Cuba and three years after he was unceremoniously designated for assignment by the Rangers, the soon to be 31-year old Garcia has his 1st big contract. He avoided arbitration at the last moment, agreeing to a 2-year, $14 million contract that, with playing time and MVP voting incentives, can increase to over $20 million. He can’t become a free agent for 3 more years, at age 34.

“I’m grateful,” Adolis says, “I’m so happy.”

Garcia not only hit 39 homers with 107 RBIs and was the ALCS MVP last year, he’s also the emotional heartbeat of this team.

“We do have a slow heart rate team,” veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski said. “Guys like Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and Evan Carter play with a slow heart rate, staying on an even keel from game to game. Sometimes you need that guy who injects energy and emotion into what we do. Adolis is that for us.”

“Yeah, I enjoy that,” Garcia said. '“That’s something that I like. My teammates believe in me. They trust me, and I just try to give that energy back.”

Adolis energized this team the most when they needed it the most. In Games 6 and 7 of the American League Championship Series in Houston, he slugged 3 home runs with 9 RBIs.

Garcia says his favorite moment from last postseason was when Corey Seager hit the 9th inning, game-tying 2-run homer in Game One of the World Series.

Think about that.  Adolis liked Seager’s homer better than his own 11th inning walk-off home run to win that same game!

“When Corey tied the game, that was crazy!”

That selfless answer says a lot about Adolis Garcia and this team.

“We are family,” Adolis said, “and I always say we are more friends now than teammates. That’s why this is so special.”

There’s something else special about Adolis. He’s quickly becoming bilingual. This was his first clubhouse interview in front of a group of reporters done exclusively in English.

What Adolis Garcia has done the last 3 years in Arlington translates in any language. And, if he can stay healthy and keep doing this 3 more years, it will translate into a contract at age 34 that would have been beyond his wildest dreams when he departed his native Cuba at age 23.

Rangers Strive For Goal That Got Away

These are the reigning World Champion Texas Rangers who re-convened for their 1st full squad workout on Monday In Surprise. But they are not the reigning American League West Champion Texas Rangers.

That title slipped away to the Houston Astros on the last day of the regular season last year. It was the goal the Rangers had last year, and it’s their goal as they start Spring Training this year. “Your goal is to win the division,” Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy said on Monday.

The Rangers didn’t win the division, but they did win a Wild Card spot, and that was the reason they had to become road warriors, setting a postseason record with 11 road wins, en route to their 1st World Series title.

“I just love how the club handled it. Part of being a really good club, a great club, is being resilient,” Bochy said. “The club to me was the best club in baseball when you look at what we went through. Between the injuries and the tough losses, they just kept bouncing back.”

Unseating the Astros as AL West Champs is the first goal this team has in 2024. Alex Bregman’s “I guess we’ll never know” celebration speech in the Houston clubhouse when they won the division last year served as motivation for Corey Seager and the Rangers in the postseason. It was a punch line the usually stoic Seager used in his ever so brief but effective victory parade speech in November.

And, now, the Rangers go into this season not thinking the target is on their back.

“Some teams may look at us as a target,” Bochy said, “but I’m hoping that we look at other teams as a target. That’s going to be our mindset.”

Notes: Corey Seager spoke to the media for the 1st time since undergoing hernia surgery last month. He says he has only been cleared to do some cardio on a stationary bike and some incline walking. He has no idea when he will be cleared to start swinging a bat, and thus, he also has no idea if he will be ready for Opening Day on March 28. does admit to being “antsy” to get things going. He just has to be a good patient and be patient right now … Injured 3rd baseman Josh Jung says he has not been given a timetable on his return from a strained right calf sustained on Friday. Likewise, since this is just the start of spring training, the plan is to take things slow and easy for now.

World Champion Rangers Open Camp

Monday, February 19 — 6:55am: We arrived in Surprise, Arizona on Sunday and were greeted with a new sign adorning the plaza wall in front of the Rangers offices at Surprise Stadium: World Series Champions 2023

And this morning, the team re-convenes for the 1st full squad workout of 2024 Spring Training with already some question marks. All Star 3rd Baseman Josh Jung reported to camp last week and immediately strained a calf muscle fielding ground balls. Bruce Bochy says he’s expected to miss at least 3 weeks. This comes on the heels of World Series MVP Corey Seager undergoing sports hernia surgery last month, putting is Opening Day in some peril.

GM Chris Young joined us live on CBS Sports Texas last night. We had fun re-living some of the great moments of the Rangers postseason run last fall. He says things have been so busy this winter that he’s never really had the chance to sit down and soak in all the things that happened last October.

One thing Young did reveal was that he was the one person who was slow to pull the trigger on calling up 21-year old rookie Evan Carter in September. It wasn’t until an injury sustained by Adolis Garcia during a 3-game sweep by the Astros by a combined score of 39-10 that Young became convinced that they had nothing to lose by promoting Carter on September 7th.

The rest, as they say, is history. Carter went on to hit .300 with 5 home runs and 10 extra base hits in 23 regular season games and set a postseason record with 9 doubles and hit .300 in the playoffs.

I can’t wait to see what Evan Carter and the rest of the Rangers do for an encore, starting today here in Surprise.

DFW Domination: 4 State Finalists in 5A & 6A Girls Hoops

South Grand Prairie Junior Taylor Barnes continued her torrid postseason pace, scoring 24 points with 12 rebounds, as SGP beat San Antonio Brennan, 53-42, on Friday night at the Alamodome to advance to the Class 6A Girls Basketball State Championship game against Duncanville.

The Pantherettes, in search of their 12th girls hoops state title, needed overtime to beat Houston Summer Creek, 39-31, as Mariah Clayton led the way with 18 points.

So, it will be an All-DFW Championship Game in both Class 6A and 5A on Saturday in San Antonio. The 5A title game figures to be an epic clash between the top two ranked teams in the state, #1 Mansfield Timberview and #2 Frisco Liberty, the defending 5A state champ led by Sophomore sensation Jacy Abii, the top ranked 2026 recruit in Texas, if not the nation.

DFW Sports Blog: Zimmer Returns To Dallas

Cowboys:  Mike Zimmer is coming back to the Cowboys as Defensive Coordinator.  Jerry Jones revealed on the Red Carpet at NFL Honors on Thursday night that he was finalizing a deal with the former Vikings Head Coach, who spent 13 years here (1994-2006).  One of the best players Zim ever coached, Darren Woodson, missed out once again on the Hall of Fame.  A finalist for the 2nd straight year, the clock is now ticking on Woody as he only has four more years of eligibility as a Modern Era candidate. After that, he gets cast away with the Everson Walls of the world in the Senior Citizen pool.  Julius Peppers (1st ballot), Devin Hester, Dwight Freeney, Andre Johnson, Patrick Willis and Senior inductees Steve McMichael and Randy Gradishar are Canton-bound this year.

NFL Honors: As expected, Lamar Jackson was the near unanimous choice as NFL MVP for the 2nd time in his career.  What was not expected was that Dak Prescott was the runner-up!  Cee Dee Lamb won “Moment of the Year” for his 92-yard TD catch vs Detroit.  So, what happened to the old saying that “Quarterbacks get all the glory but also all of the blame.”  This play doesn’t happen if Dak doesn’t somehow avoid the sack in the end zone and then, on the run, throw a perfectly placed laser 50 yards downfield to a wide open Cee Dee who simply had to catch and waltz into the end zone. Why doesn’t Dak get at least half of that award?

One other award of note:  Myles Garrett, the 2013 Landry Award winner from Arlington Martin High School and Texas A&M, wins Defensive Player of the Year for his 14 sacks, 17 TFLs, 30 QBHs & 4 FFs playing for a Cleveland defense that gave up the fewest yards.  Those are almost identical stats as what Micah Parsons (3rd in voting) produced — 14 sacks, 18 TFLs, 33 QBHs & 1 FF for #5 defense in yards & points allowed.

Mavericks:  Luka Doncic scored 39 points as the Mavs (29-23) swept their 3-game road trip with a 122-108 win over the short-handed Knicks, who played without All Star Jalen Brunson (ankle).   Meanwhile, Mavs GM Nico Harrison was active at the Trade Deadline, acquiring two front court players.  6-10 rim protector Daniel Gafford, a 2019 2nd round draft pick out Arkansas, comes over from Washington in exchange for Richaun Holmes and an OKC 1st round pick.  Gafford is averaging 11 points, 8 rebounds & 2 blocked shots per game.  6-7 P. J. Washington, who was the 12th pick in the draft in 2019 and is averaging 13 points per game, arrives from Charlotte for veterans Grant Williams, Seth Curry and a 2027 1st round pick.  Tim Cowlishaw of the Dallas Morning News is a critic of the P. J. Washington move.  Meanwhile, Sam Quinn of CBS Sports even gives the Mavs a grade of D+ for the trades. The Mavs look for their 3rd straight win at Madison Square Garden tonight against former Maverick turned NBA All Star Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.  In the meantime, here’s the link to the official NBA Trade Tracker.  The new Mavs should be here when the team hosts OKC (35-16) at 2:00 Saturday.

Super Bowl LVIII: As you may have heard, the Super Bowl will be on CBS Texas on Sunday.  It’s the 22nd time CBS has televised the big game.  The late, great Pat Summerall was the CBS sideline reporter for the 1st big game between Vince Lombardi’s Packers and Hank Stram’s Chiefs.  The game was actually simulcast on both CBS and NBC (the AFL’s TV network).  Pat used to tell the story that NBC was in a commercial break and missed the 2nd half kickoff.  On his sideline headset, Pat was instructed by the CBS Producer that he needed to go tell Coach Lombardi, a coach he used to play for with the Giants, that he has to kick off again because NBC missed the 1st kick.  Imagine how that conversation went!

Rangers: All Star OF Adolis Garcia agrees to a 2 year, $14 million contract. The 30-year old ALCS MVP now won’t be arbitration eligible until 2026.  Pitchers & Catchers report in 5 days (Feb 14).

Stars:  After a 2-1 win in Buffalo on Tuesday night, the Stars ventured north of the border to Toronto on Wednesday night and fell victim to two goals within a 20-second span midway through the 3rd period in a 5-4 loss to the Maple Leafs. Click here for the highlights.  They wrap up the road trip in Montreal on Saturday night.

DFW Sports Blog: Rex Ryan To Cowboys?

By Bill Jones

10:30pm, Wednesday, 2/7/24

Cowboys:  So, how about Rex Ryan as Cowboys Defensive Coordinator?   Check this out: Over a 10-year stretch from 2005-2014, his Ravens & Jets defenses ranked in the top 11 in the league EVERY year.  Our guy Isaiah Stanback first suggested it on CBS Sports Texas on Sunday night.  Watch the video below and just look at George Teague’s wide-eyed reaction when he hears Isaiah espouse the virtues of a guy who he says had Bill Belichick, Tom Brady & the Patriots working overtime trying to figure out when Isaiah played in New England.  What made jaws drop when it was suggested is the fact the 61-year old Ryan hasn’t coached in 7 years.  But he’s younger than the other two former head coaches who have interviewed, Mike Zimmer & Ron Rivera.  And, “idle hands” haven’t stopped Jerry before.  After all, he lured Barry Switzer off the couch he had been lying on for six years to be Cowboys HEAD COACH 30 years ago!

Mavericks:  The NBA Trade Deadline arrives at 2pm Thursday.  Mavericks could use some help.  It seems every year we say that.  Last year GM Nico Harrison acquired Kyrie Irving, and the Mavs missed the playoffs.  What does he do for an encore this year?  Trade or no trade, just a few hours later, the Mavs look for their 3rd straight win at Madison Square Garden against former Maverick turned NBA All Star Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.  In the meantime, here’s the link to the official NBA Trade Tracker.

Super Bowl LVIII: As you may have heard, the Super Bowl will be on CBS Texas on Sunday.  It’s the 22nd time CBS has televised the game.  Nate Burleson sat down with Jim Nantz, who will be calling his 9th Super Bowl, for a trip down memory lane.

Royals: 23-year old Colleyville Heritage HS grad Bobby Witt Jr. signs an 11-year, $288.7 million contract with the Kansas City Royals.  The deal has a maximum value of $377.7 million.  According to MLB Network Insider Mark Feinsand on X, the Royals will pay Witt $136 million the next 7 years.  He has a player option at age 30 in 2031, which is now the earliest he could become a free agent and come home and play for the Rangers.

Rangers: Pitchers & Catchers report in 7 days (Feb 14).

DFW Sports Blog — Rex Retires

By Bill Jones

Monday, 2/5/24

Rex Retires:  Former Plano Wildcat, Nebraska Cornhusker & Super Bowl Champion New England Patriot RB Rex Burkhead retires after 10-year NFL career.2013 6th round draft pick played a full decade in the league — the epitome of what we are looking for in the Big Green NFL Draft Scouting Notebook 📗each year!

Royals: 23-year old Colleyville Heritage HS grad Bobby Witt Jr. signs an 11-year, $288.7 million contract with the Kansas City Royals. The deal has a maximum value of $377.7 million.

Commanders: Dan Quinn was introduced as Washington Head Coach today & is hiring Kliff Kingsbury as OC & Cowboys PGC Joe Whitt Jr. as DC. Kingsbury spent last season as an analyst on USC staff. Clearly, Washington, with 2nd pick in draft, is hoping to trade up to #1 and bring USC QB Caleb Williams back home to DC.

Cowboys: Jerry Jones says he’s starting Defensive Coordinator interviews this morning. Ron Rivera, Mike Zimmer, & Aden Durde are interviewing. Why not Bill Belichick?

FIFA World Cup: Jerry still can’t win the big one at AT&T Stadium. Dallas has been named the host of the 1st FIFA World Cup Semifinal on July 14, 2026…one of nine World Cup games to be played here, the most of any host city. However, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ will host the World Cup Final on July 19, 2026.

Mavs: The Mavericks blew a 25 point 1st quarter lead and lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, 129-117, on Saturday night at the AAC, falling to 26-23 on the season. Dallas starts a 3-game road trip in Philadelphia on Monday night. Luka (ankle) is questionable. Kyrie (thumb) is likely to return after missing 6 games. Sixers reigning MVP Joel Embiid will miss significant time due to surgery for meniscus injury in left knee.

Stars: 1st time All Star Jake Oettinger was the winning goaltender in a 7-4 win in Toronto for Team Matthews, which was led by its namesake Auston Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leaf star who scored 2 goals and was named MVP. The Stars open a 3-game road trip at Buffalo on Tuesday.

Rangers: Pitchers & Catchers report in 9 days (Feb 14).

Happy Birthday, Roger Staubach!  Captain America is 82 years old today and can still beat you one-on-one!
